Sandy looked downcast as she stirred a pink package of Saccharin into her coffee. Pru shot me a glance, and I shrugged. Most of us feel pretty good after a rousing session of Jazzercise. Pru and I had waited for Sandy to arrive before the hostess took us to a table at the back of the busy restaurant. Sandy took the chair opposite to us.

“I suppose you want to talk about Margo,” said Sandy. Her tone was wary, and that surprised me. What had happened since we talked at the mall? She’d seemed really chummy then. But now, she seemed like someone else entirely.

“I can’t stay for long, and I don’t have much to say.” Sandy’s tone was defensive. She almost sounded like I had forced her to meet with us. This was starting to piss me off. It wasn’t my fault I’d gotten involved. I was an innocent bystander who tried to save Margo’s life!

But I kept on getting dragged back into the conflict. Sandy had asked me to help her clean out Margo’s locker, and Sandy had suggested that I call Sweet Thangs and ask about the earrings. Mrs. Douglas had sicced the police on me. What was wrong with these people?

Sandy glanced at her menu and shut it. “I’ll probably have a cup of coffee and leave,” she said.

I was tired of these games.

“Sandy? What’s wrong?” I asked.

“Nothing.” Her mouth settled into a flat line. She played with the empty pink Saccharine package.

“You seem to be in a bad mood,” I said.

“Not really. Look,” she said, “I have a full day of work ahead of me at the mall. I need to get showered and changed before I clock in.”

The waitress put three glasses of ice water down in front of us and took our orders for coffee. She said she’d come back for our food choices.

“I phoned Sweet Thangs,” I said as I took the red box out of my purse and slid it across the table. “They told me this held a pair of earrings, as you suspected. Three leaves made of ten-carat gold. On sale for $9.99. Not exactly what I’d call expensive jewelry.”

Sandy grabbed the box and tossed it into her purse. “Yeah, well, maybe they were cheap, but they were better than nothing.”

“I also found a bottle of pills.”

Sandy’s head snapped up. “You did?”

“They had fallen out of Margo’s purse and rolled under my passenger seat. But I didn’t find it until after Mrs. Douglas called the cops and told them I’d stolen Margo’s purse.”

Sandy’s mouth sagged open. “She did?” Now Sandy had the good grace to turn crimson. Obviously, she either hadn’t expected the cops to visit me or…

And then it hit me. I said, “I’m wondering how the cops knew where I worked. I didn’t tell Mrs. Douglas.”

Sandy didn’t meet my gaze. She stared down at her paper placemat. She mumbled, “I can’t tell you.”

“You owe me,” I said coldly.

Sandy said nothing.

“You can’t imagine how awful it was,” I pressed on.
